Write a Handover Note to Tomorrow You

The most expensive twenty minutes of your week are the ones you spend every morning reconstructing what you were doing yesterday. Three lines written before you close the laptop erase almost all of it.

A glowing sticky note with an arrow resting on a desk beside a closed laptop, as night gives way to dawn

You have done this handover a hundred times for other people. New joiner, colleague going on leave, a project moving teams — you write down where things stand, what is blocked, what you would do next. It is ordinary professional courtesy.

Almost nobody does it for themselves.

So every morning starts the same way. You open the laptop, look at a half-finished file, and spend fifteen or twenty minutes rebuilding context you had complete command of yesterday afternoon. Not thinking — reconstructing. Then you check messages, because reconstruction is uncomfortable and the inbox is not, and by the time you return the morning is thinner than it was.

The fix takes two minutes. Before you shut down, write three lines somewhere you will see them first thing:

Where I stopped. The specific place, not the general area. Not “working on the migration doc” but “wrote the rollback section, stuck on whether to include the vendor timeline.”

The next physical action. Something you could do half-asleep. “Open the doc, draft three bullets under Risks.” The bar is deliberately low — the point is to have a foothold, not a plan.

One thing I am carrying. The nagging worry, the unsent message, the decision you have been avoiding. Naming it externally means you stop half-holding it overnight.

That is it. No system, no app, no tagging scheme. A sticky note works.

What surprises people is the evening effect. Writing the note forces a clean stop, and a clean stop is much easier to walk away from than a trailing one. You close the day on purpose rather than because you ran out of energy.

Tomorrow-you is a colleague you will definitely be working with. Brief them.
